Being aware of the rising demands of Glass and Ceramic materials in modern technology, the Ministry of Education of Bangladesh granted funds for the establishment of Glass & Ceramic Engineering Department (GCE) in Rajshahi University of Engineering & Technology (RUET), Rajshahi. Finally the department came into being with academic activities on 23rd April, 2010 through the guidance of University Grant Commission (UGC). In its early days, the department of GCE was housed with two rooms in the administrative building of RUET. In 2014, the department shifted to the new five storied GCE building. Now it is one of the well-planned and well-decorated academic buildings in RUET.

At present it is the only department of Bangladesh which provides undergraduate program in the areas of Glass & Ceramic Engineering. There are seven faculty members in this department all of whom have graduated from well reputed Universities. Currently five graduating batches having around 150 students are running in this department.

First graduating students of this department have already been involved themselves in various Glass and Ceramic related R&D and manufacturing industries. In the coming days our graduates will lead the industries, academia and government sectors.

The students of this department get plenty of opportunities to run their research in modeling, manufacturing and characterizing Glass and Ceramic materials by its eight well-equipped laboratories i.e. Ceramic Forming Lab, Glass Forming Lab, Nano Synthesis Lab, Materials Characterization Lab, Materials Testing Lab, Chemical Analysis Lab, Microstructural Lab and Computer Lab. The department is now pursuing active research in the emerging areas of glass, glass-ceramics, bio-ceramics, electronic ceramics, refractories, cement and whitewares. The outcomes of this research are being published in reputed national and international journals regularly. Day by day the department is moving ahead through the joint effort of the faculties and students.
